The celebrated prime geodesic theorem for a closed hyperbolic surface says that the number of closed geodesics of length at most t is asymptotically e^t/t. For a closed surface equipped with two different hyperbolic structures, Schwartz and Sharp (’93) showed that the number of free homotopy classes of length about t in both hyperbolic structures is asymptotically a constant multiple e^{ct} /t^{3/2} for some 0<c<1. 

We will discuss the asymptotic correlations of the length spectra of convex cocompact manifolds, generalizing Schwartz-Sharp’s results. Surprisingly, it is helpful for us to relate this problem with understanding the Jordan spectrum of a discrete subgroup in higher rank. In particular, we will explain the source of the exponential and polynomial factors in Schwartz-Sharp’s asymptotic from a higher rank viewpoint.
 
We will also discuss the asymptotic correlations of the displacement spectra and  the ratio law between the asymptotic corrleations of the length and displacement spectra.  (This is joint work with Hee Oh).

Applied Mathematics [7] Manifold learning with sparse regularised optimal transport 4:00pm -

In this talk, we discuss a method for manifold learning that relies on a symmetric version of the optimal transport problem with a quadratic regularisation. We show that the solution of such a problem yields a sparse and adaptive affinity matrix that can be interpreted as a generalisation of the bistochastic kernel normalisation. We prove that the resulting kernel is consistent with a Laplace-type operator in the continuous limit, discuss geometric interpretations and establish robustness to heteroskedastic noise. The performance on certain simulated and real data examples will be shown. Some open questions will be raised across the talk.

Regression methods provide a simple mechanism for evaluating empirical functions over scattered data points, allowing to forecast future values. In particular, kernel-based regressions, such as the Nadaraya-Watson estimator are suitable for cases in which the relationship between the data points and the function is not linear. Successive applications of the Nadarya-Watson estimator, also known as Laplacian Pyramids model or iterative bias reduction, yield a multiscale model that generates a smoothed version of a function by using Gaussian kernels to smooth the residuals. 

In this talk, I will review some recent extensions of this regression for spatio-temporal forecasting and bio-medical applications.

To any group G we  associate the space Ch(G) of all characters on G. After defining this space and discussing its interesting properties, I’ll turn to discuss dynamics on such spaces. Our main result is that the action of any​ arithmetic group on the character space of its amenable/solvable radical is stiff, i.e., any probability measure which is stationary under random walks must be invariant. This generalizes a classical theorem of Furstenberg for dynamics on tori. Relying on works of Bader, Boutonnet, Houdayer, and Peterson, this stiffness result is used to deduce dichotomy statements (and ‘charmenability’) for (not necessarily semi-simple) higher rank arithmetic groups pertaining to their normal subgroups, dynamical systems, representation theory and more. The talk is based on a joint work with Uri Bader.

Geometric Analysis and Application [9] Flexible Smooth Immersions of Cylinders in R^3 2:00pm -

Abstract: Given a smooth surface in Euclidean 3-space, a classical question in differential geometry asks whether the surface can be continuously deformed through a smooth, nontrivial family of isometric surfaces. If such a family exists and does not arise from rigid motions of R^3, then the surface is said to be flexible. An old conjecture asserts that flexible, smooth closed surfaces do not exist. In this talk, we survey this question and the general uniqueness problem for isometric immersions. We then present new examples of flexible, smooth immersed cylinders in R^3 which are neither flat nor minimal. We conclude with a discussion of potential approaches to the construction of flexible, smooth closed surfaces. These results are part of upcoming work with Andrew Sageman-Furnas.

Applied Mathematics [7] Two Techniques Involving High-Dimensional Data 3:00pm -

Data in high dimensional Euclidean space may often be described with fewer parameters than the ambient space, perhaps lying on or near a submanifold of lower intrinsic dimension. In part one of this talk, we will discuss a new method for estimating this intrinsic dimension from the data: a version of local PCA which is calibrated on quadratic embeddings which may better approximate a manifold at larger scales. The second part of the talk will focus on a technique of random embeddings to reduce ambient dimension. The topics of this talk are joint work with Anna Gilbert.

Let $G$ be a connected semisimple real algebraic group. Let $\theta$ be a non-empty subset consisting of simple roots of $G$. The class of $\theta$-transverse subgroups of $G$ includes all discrete subgroups of rank one Lie groups, $\theta$-Anosov subgroups and their relative versions. For any Zariski dense $\theta$-transverse subgroup $\Gamma$, we introduce  the notion of $\theta$-growth indicators and  discuss their properties and roles in the study of conformal measures,  extending the work of Quint (2003). We also prove that for any $(\Gamma,\psi)$-conformal measure on the $\theta$-boundary,   the conical set of $\Gamma$ has measure either $1$ or $0$, depending on whether the $\psi$-Poincare series  diverges or not; this extends recent works of Sambarino and of Canary-Zhang-Zimmer  proved for special measures supported on the limit set. Our work is new even for $\theta$-Anosov subgroups and answers a question of Sambarino (2022).  Applications include an analogue of the Ahlfors measure conjecture: the limit set of a $\theta$-Anosov subgroup is either the whole boundary or of Lebesgue measure zero. When theta is the set of all simple roots, these were previously obtained by Minju Lee-Oh.

This talk  is based on joint work with Dongryul Kim and Yahui Wang.
