02/13/2026 - 4:00pm I’ll discuss how to leverage symbolic dynamics to understand Anosov diffeomorphisms of surfaces, starting with the most basic case of linear total automorphisms. The key idea is the construction of so-called Markov partitions that code the dynamics of the diffeomorphism. More recently, the same ideas have been extended to prove new results about general diffeomorphisms of manifolds. Location:
