| Geometry, Symmetry and Physics | From Character Sheaves to Characters of Deligne–Lusztig Representations via Categorical Traces |

A very important result of Lusztig asserts that characters of Deligne–Lusztig representations are obtained by the sheaf-to-function correspondence from character sheaves. The goal of my talk is to outline a proof of a generalization of this result using the categorical trace machinery. This is a joint work in progress with Dennis Gaitsgory and Nick Rozenblyum. |

We will present a classification of group-invariant foliations of a domain of discontinuity for PSL(4,R)-Hitchin representations whose leaves are properly convex domains in projective spaces. Two foliations of this form are the starting point of Guichard-Wienhard’s beautiful framework to describe the projective geometry of PSL(4,R)-Hitchin representations; the main result is that there is exactly one other similar foliation. We will emphasize how the special structure of Hitchin representations can be used to understand the shape of these domains of discontinuity, and the role this plays in the proof. |

Single particle cryo-EM is an increasingly popular technique for determining 3-D molecular structures at high resolution. The 2017 Nobel Prize in Chemistry was awarded to three of the pioneers of cryo-EM, and already in the early stages of the global pandemic, cryo-EM was successfully applied to image the SARS-CoV-2 spike protein. We will discuss the mathematical principles and computational methods for reconstruction using cryo-EM, focusing on its sample complexity (i.e., the number of images required for reconstruction as a function of the signal-to-noise ratio) and reconstruction of flexible molecules. |

The classical uniformization theorem for Riemann surfaces is well-established for both compact and non-compact connected surfaces. However, in the discrete setting, the discrete uniformization theorem is only known for closed polyhedral surfaces. This talk will propose a discrete uniformization problem for all surfaces and relate it to the classical Weyl problem in the hyperbolic 3-space and the Cauchy-Alexandrov rigidity theorem on convex polytopes. Some of our progress will be discussed, including a discrete Schwarz-Pick-Ahlfors lemma and its application. This is joint work with Yanwen Luo. |

The inverse problem of medical CT scans is to recover an image of the X-ray absorption coefficient ϕ inside a patient from absorption data collected after irradiating the patient with X-rays. We consider a generalization of this problem that turns the scalar X-ray absorption equation into a coupled linear system (where the coefficient ϕ is now a square matrix) which asks whether the coefficient ϕ is still recoverable. This finds application in a form of imaging called polarimetric neutron tomography. In addition, we consider the mentioned problem on a class of unbounded geometries called asymptotically hyperbolic spaces. We demonstrate that under certain regularity conditions the coefficient ϕ in this case is also recoverable. If the coefficient is of the form ϕ + A where A is a matrix that depends linearly on velocity (e.g. comes from a connection), then the problem isn’t solvable but the pair (ϕ, A) can be recovered up to a gauge.
An aim of the presentation is to be accessible to people with varied interests.
