I will discuss some recent progress on the positivity of simplicial volume for nonpositively curved manifolds. In particular, I will discuss (1) the relation between Euler characteristic and simplicial volume for 4-dimensional nonpositively curved manifolds, following work of Connell–R–Wang and Kim–Wan, and (2) the relation between isolated codimension-one submanifolds and positivity of simplicial volume, following work of Connell–R–Wang.
