Event description:
Asymptotic Group Theory studies the behavior of a sequence of invariants attached to a group G. This talk will concentrate on representation growth, which studies the number of representations of G. For arithmetic groups, the number of representations of degree d grows polynomially with d, satisfies some (unknown) recursion, and admits some mysterious symmetries. I will discuss these and some connections between the representation growths of different groups.
